Emily Jane Bronte

Ellis Bell or better known as Emily bronte is probably best remembered for her sole classic novel Wuthering Heights and yesterday a portrait of the said writer was sold for £4,600 at a Northamptonshire auctioneer’s.

The portrait (seen here) an oil painting 13in x 9.5in oil painting went under the hammer in Towcester by auctioneer JP Humbert. This the second to have reached the estimated price, the previous portrait being sold in December.

Auctioneer Jonathan Humbert said:

“We have another Bronte painting which we will put up for auction in April and we are hoping to make it three out of three.”

Emily Bronte became sick during her brother’s funeral in September 1848 and eventually died of tuberculosis (due to unsanitary conditions at home ie the source of water being contaminated by runoff from the church’s graveyard!) on 19 December 1848 at around two in the afternoon. She was interred in the Church of St. Michael and All Angels family vault, Haworth, West Yorkshire.
