Charles Dickens 200th Anniversary on BBC2

Dickens known for a good deal of dry humour within his writing may well appreciate that new comedy adventure set in the Dickensian world of Jedrington Secret-Past, the up-standing family man and owner of The Old Shop of Stuff and Victorian London’s most successful purveyor of miscellaneous odd things.

The Bleak Old Shop Of Stuff (clearly a take on the old curiosity shop) is a BBC production of a one hour Christmas Special which was aired on the 19th Dec and is still available on the BBC Iplayer followed by three 30-minute episodes to air late 2011 – early 2012.

Writer Mark Evans is no stranger to this sort of spoof. Evans has already penned Radio 4 comedy Bleak Expectations (the same idea but about a different set of Dickensian characters).

The series has a great case led by Robert Webbin the role of Jedrington and Katherine Parkinson as the lovely named his wife Conceptiva.

The Christmas special will feature Stephen Fry as the evil lawyer Malifax Skulkingworm alongside David Mitchell, Celia Imrie, the wonderful Pauline McLynn and the ever excellent Johnny Vegas.

I shall be checking this out tonight as it looks like it could be fun….
